Say Hey to Ruby~
She is such a sweetie!
and she is rather chunky.
But she is still beautiful!
Samson- Moluccan- He was two years old when his previous owner took him into the vet to be euthanized. The thing is, nothing was wrong with him! He was perfectly healthy! His owner just didn’t want him anymore and didn’t want to care for him.
We are Giving Parrots Hope
Parrot Hope Rescue was originally founded in 2005, and is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization based in Mantua, Ohio. It is dedicated to alleviating the crisis facing captive parrots, who often end up unwanted, neglected and abandoned by improper homes.
While the problem of pet animal overpopulation is well known, sometimes lost in these stories are the problems of companion parrots. Indeed, the beauty and intrigue of pet parrots has encouraged many people to purchase parrots on impulse, without thought or knowledge to the long-term considerations of parrot ownership. Many parrots in homes today will outlive their owners, with some parrots living as long as 100 years. Parrots have also been in domesticated situations for a far shorter time than dogs or cats. This means that their behavior can be unpredictable to a pet owner expecting an animal as domesticated as a dog. It also means that parrots have many special dietary and health concerns not seen in other pets. Many people who get parrots ultimately don’t know how to take care of them, leading to situations of abuse, neglect and ultimately abandonment.
In 2008, we took in over 100 parrots, and in 2009, we took in over 150 parrots. We have been helping to give them a temporary home during health and behavioral rehabilitation, and ultimately seeking to find them permanent homes. Some of these parrots, because of abuse and neglect, will never be adoptable because of distrust of humans. A large majority of these parrots, though, with a caring hand and patience, slowly become adoptable and are able to develop positive relationships with humans. These birds, which are up for adoption, can be seen on our Petfinder.org listing.
Because Parrot Hope is a 501(c)3, the organization is fully funded by donations from the community. Without support from the community, we would not be able to do the work that we do to help parrots. Parrot care is far more expensive than that needed by other animals, with special dietary needs and high veterinary costs. Please consider making a fully tax-deductible donation to Parrot Hope today!
Parrot Hope is fully staffed by volunteer workers, who have donated countless hours of their time to advancing the rescue’s mission. We are always looking for more volunteers to join our team, and no parrot experience is necessary! If you are interested in doing rewarding volunteer work for these remarkable animals, visit our website and fill out a Volunteer Application today!
Thank you for your support!
Say Hey to Wookie!
Unfortunately He wasn’t always this social. He was abused by the younger children in his previous home. They would shoot him with water pistols and throw objects at him. When we brought him to the sanctuary he would drop off of his perch in fear when anyone would walk into the room.
Say hello to Nikki.
She is a Sulfur Crested Cockatoo. Nikki was found in a basement where she lived in almost complete dark for 18 years with little food and very dirty water.
Kiwi- Blue and Gold Macaw.
Kiwi was surrendered with a timneh grey. They were both found in inadequately sized cages. Kiwi was in a 2x2 cage with no room to turn around, resulting in this tail to drag in his poop. The timneh was found in a hamster cage. They were fed dog food instead of the proper food while they struggled to fight away swarms of flies.
I think Faith fancies you!
Isn’t she beautiful?!
This is Kool-Aid, One of our very unique Macaws!
